Sarah & Nate | Minneapolis Engagement Photos

Sarah and Nate are both Masters students at the University of Minnesota studying Clarinet and Tuba respectively. They are tying the knot this coming August at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. We had so much fun with them taking their Minneapolis engagement photos. Although windy, it was such a beautiful spring evening and the light was absolutely perfect for the warm pictures we love so much!

We began the portrait session at the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Nate loves the architecture of the museum so we captured elements of it throughout the engagement session.

Next we headed across the street to Minneapolis’ Loring Park. The park is very close to Sarah and Nate’s place and is also a big part of their engagement story. After dinner at the Loring Kitchen and Bar, Nate proposed to Sarah on the outskirts of the park.  We had fun experiencing their engagement story, hanging out and walking around Minneapolis and finding beautiful places to photograph.

Sarah also really wanted some pictures with Penny, their crazy, fun-loving beagle. Penny was so excited to get outside and be a part of everything. We love incorporating unique and personal things into portrait sessions so we were very happy to have Sarah’s dog join in on the fun.

Our last stop was downtown Minneapolis right outside Orchestra Hall. As music majors, Sarah and Nate love Orchestra Hall and thought it would be a great place to include in their portraits. It was the perfect way to end the evening. We are so excited to be a part of Sarah and Nate’s wedding this summer and we can’t wait to see how they incorporate their love of music into their wedding. There is no doubt in our minds that this will be a beautiful wedding with such a great location (Walker Art Center) and two amazing people! Stay tune for those photos coming this fall!

Cheers,
Dan & Anna Oksnevad

Afton Alps Engagement Photography

Laura and Caleb met in college through a group of friends. They started out as close friends and eventually that friendship grew to a deeper relationship. Laura had just finished a semester abroad in Spain when she and Caleb became engaged. Laura is currently studying Northwestern College in St. Paul, double majoring in Spanish and Marketing, while Caleb works in the medical field. They are getting married this coming October in the Wisconsin Dells, where we will also be photographing their wedding.

Right away Laura told us, “Caleb and I are best friends; we just love to have fun together!” This couldn’t be more evident in their relationship and our goal for their engagement session was to capture just that. They both love snowboarding and really wanted to have their engagement session at Afton Alps in Hastings, MN. We were so excited when we heard this as it would be a fun out-of-the-box shoot. However, with such a mild winter here in Minneapolis it was a challenge to find a snowy weekend to have the portrait session. We told Laura we would be “on call” so that at a moment’s notice we could meet at Afton if the weather was right. We waited about 3 weeks after they booked us until finally we had snow.

The day started out cold and cloudy but the sun came out later in the afternoon giving us a variety of lighting conditions. We even had a few flurries which was more than any of us had hoped for. We were able to capture Laura and Caleb on the ski lifts and boarding down the hills together as well as goofing around in the snow having a snowball fight! It was the perfect day!

We had so much fun getting to know Laura and Caleb and watching them snowboard. They are such gifted individuals that complement each other so well. We are excited to head out to the Dells this fall to be a part of their wedding. Their wedding will be one awesome celebration in such a fun location.

So, without further ado, here is Laura and Caleb’s Afton Alps Engagement Photography Portrait Session.

Are you looking for baby or family portraits? If so, let me introduce our good friend, Angela Kalthoff. She is a newborn, child and family photographer with a local studio in Delano, MN. She has a very fun approach to portraiture and her goal is to capture the heart of each person she photographs. She has an incredible portfolio and we love working with her.

A message from Angela:
“My style is a fun and fresh approach to portraiture. This will not be your typical studio experience, and I believe my style is one reasons my clients refer me to friends and family and continue to come back.
I believe in capturing who my subject is rather than just what they look like. With minimal posing and more interaction, I am able to capture the heart of each person I photograph, to create images that will be cherished for a lifetime.
You won’t hear me saying “say cheese” rather you will see me interact with my subjects in many ways such as singing or conversation to elicit those genuine expressions you know and love.
My favorite portrait usually ends up being the unplanned and unexpected- a smile a young girl is sharing with her mother or a baby’s impish grin right before they take off at a speedy crawl. I will capture who your child truly is- that is my goal.”

Angela Kalthoff Photography is a professional newborn photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota specializing in modern natural light portraits of newborns, babies, children, and maternity in color and black and white.

Jenna & JP – Engagement Portraits

We traveled from Minneapolis to Southeast Wisconsin to meet up with the happy couple. The bride-to-be was gracious enough to select all the locations for the shoot as we were not familiar with the area. We love when our couples choose their locations as we want their photographs to be set in areas of special meaning to them – reflecting a part of their story. Jenna did a superb job of scouting as we couldn’t have selected a better location ourselves.

We began the shoot at sunrise photographing along Lake Michigan. The low light shimmering off the water was absolutely perfect and the serenity of the early morning created a great atmosphere for our couple to get comfortable in from of our cameras. After the sun was up we explored the quaint town of Kenosha, Wisconsin. The day held brilliant blue skies and warm sun which contrasted the crisp breeze off the lake. We had so much fun making portraits of Jenna and JP and cannot wait for their wedding in Chicago this June!

Here are some of our favorite photographs from Jenna & JP’s engagement session.

Isabella’s Senior Portraits

Things aren’t too busy yet with this year’s weddings, so I decided to share some highlights from last fall’s favorite senior portrait session…

The shoot was scheduled for an afternoon in early October. Isabella, our model, had recently moved up from Florida and this was her first experience with the beauty of Minnesota seasons. It was a gorgeous autumn day; the colors were still vibrant, the sun was warm, and there was that crispness about the air – just before the cold of winter sets in.

We began our session at Lake Minnetonka. We primarily photographed in the forest to diffuse the light through the trees as the sun was still high and the light harsh. Once the sun lowered and the light warmed up a bit we photographed in several open fields capturing some great sun flare. From there we ventured into Wayzata, photographing along some interesting textures and backdrops and making some great photographs along the piers of Wayzata Bay. We ended the day with a glamour style shoot in downtown Minneapolis, as Isabella wanted to contrast the warm casual photographs with some big city allure.

It was a great senior portrait session and we had a blast photographing in so many fun locations. We wish Isabella all the best as she wraps up her senior year and heads off to college next fall.

(In addition to my digital gear I had brought along some film cameras. Isabella loves photography and after looking over my equipment asked if we could take some photos of her photographing with my vintage Kodak Duaflex II. I think those are some of my favorite images in this series.)

Micah Kvidt - 04/11 - 1:55 pm

Looks great bro! It’s good to see senior pictures outside of the “traditional box”! Looks like all of Florida’s talent is moving up to Minnesota right when I move to Florida ;)

Abigail - 04/11 - 4:40 pm

So fresh & fun! LOVE these!

Kass - 04/11 - 4:47 pm

Very cute!

Sarah L - 04/11 - 4:58 pm

She is adorable! Great work!

Jason Rogers - 04/11 - 10:50 am

This series is strong – relaxed and well directed. An indication of both a composed model and a talented photographer. Well done.

John - 11/11 - 6:39 pm

Great session. Hard to believe shes a high school senior and not a model.
